What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the dental field dealing with straightening the teeth for cosmetic as well as functional improvement.

There is a difference between an orthodontist/specialist and a general dentist who performs orthodontics.  A general dentist merely goes to Dental School.  An orthodontist goes to Dental School and then attends an Orthodonitc Residency in an accredited university for 2 to 3 years full time.  Dr. Strange is a board certified specialist in orthdontics for children and adults.

If you or your children are contemplating orthodontics, make sure you have a trained specialist.  Do not be fooled by general dentists who practice orthodontics along with their regular general practice.  You are receiving a specialized service - make sure you have a board certified orthodontist performing those services.

What is a D.M.D?

A D.M.D is a Doctor of Dental Medicine.  Dr. Strange completed his Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) at the University of Pittsburgh in 1984.

What is an M.D.S?

An M.D.S. is a Master in Dental Science.  This is a master's degree following an orthodontic residency.

Dr. Strange conmpleted his orthodontic residency at the University of Pittsburgh in 1986 and obtained his Master in Dental Science (M.D.S.) degree there as well.

Why do I need a Board Certified Orthodontist?

Board certification is a voluntary effort in continuing education that is unique in that it applies earlier classroom work and conventional continuing education to the real world of patient care.  This culminates in presentation of orthodontic treatment results for critical review by a panel of nationally respected peers. The significance of board certification goes far beyond achieving approval from this panel of experts.  The greatest benefit comes from the in-depth self-evaluation that goes into the years of preparation for board certification.
